Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
